Swanscombe Marsh is not an empty space waiting to be filled by a developer. It is many rich and diverse habitats for insects, birds, plants and reptiles: coastal habitats, grasslands, scrub and wetlands. It is a sanctuary for people in need of genuine engagement with nature; an absorbing, refreshing and enriching experience for those with the willingness to see it. This country has one of the worst records for nature depletion in the world – 189th out of 218. Biodiversity and abundance in nature are not just about numbers; they represent the complexity needed for a functioning world in balance. We can ill afford to lose any more wild places, least of all somewhere as rich as Swanscombe Marshes.
