My main concerns are two fold: First, the impact on the Crossness nature reserve and the loss of valuable habitat - one of the last remnants of grazing marsh in south east London. The grazing paddocks that are the subject of Cory’s proposed compulsory purchase order on is a piece of land that has never been previously developed. This is a precious resource vital for wildlife and I do not feel that Cory has made sufficient effort to look for alternative brownfield sites such as the Belvedere Industrial Estate, next door to the reserve. Secondly, this seems like a case that could create an extremely bad precedent for the future development of planning law. My understanding is that Cory is seeking to retrofit Carbon capture storage for an energy from waste plant that is currently under construction. The planning system should incentivise carbon mitigation from the outset - not permit construction of facilities (such as a sizable energy from waste plant) without planning in carbon mitigation… and then allowing that poor decision to be used to justify environmental destruction on an industrial scale to remediate the impact of the new facilities.
