Substantial expansion of the airport will enable significantly more flights and therefore significant increase in emissions, at a time when the UK has signed up to legally binding commitments to reduce emissions of CO2. It therefore runs contrary to government policy. There will be similar increases in emissions caused by car travel to the airport. The airport is owned by Luton Borough Council, which is the regulator, so there is a conflict of interest which I am not convinced is being properly addressed. One argument being expressed is that if Luton Airport does not expand, then it will lose business to other airports which are permitted to expand. This fear has been used to encourage support for expansion from the local community.
