The proposal does no take climate change seriously enough and does not take sufficient measures to mitigate the additional carbon emissions caused by the building/operation of the airport and the local impact of additional aircraft/vehicle movements. The proposal could do a lot more which would allow the build while protecting the environment. Offsetting is not a sensible approach to emission control as the emissions still exist. The applicant should take a more serious approach which actually reduced emissions elsewhere to compensate against the emissions from the new airport. The applicant should take a number of additional measures to mitigate emissions caused by the new airport, these should include. 1. The owner of the airport has a large number of vehicles in its other businesses. this application should seek to move all those vehicles to electric to mitigate against the emissions from the airport 2. the owner operates many hundreds of properties which use gas. the owner should use this application to mitigate the impact of the airport by converting every property they own to generate solar energy from the roofs and convert from gas to air pumps for heating. 3. the airport buildings and land adjacent to the runways are ideal for solar panel installations. it is possible for the airport to introduce sufficient solar/wind installations at the new airport to generate all the electricity it needs. 4. since the application the number of trains stopping at the airport station has actually fallen. the station no longer has a direct service to Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield and other Midlands/Northern cities. Passengers often have to change trains twice and are effectively discouraged from travelling by train. Passengers travelling by train are actually falling and the proposal does nothing material to encourage train travel yet spends considerable amounts on improving car movements. serious propositions need to be made to make train a real option for those travelling form north of the town.
