I am writing to express my support for the proposed expansion of Luton Airport. The economic impact on the area will be of immense value in coming years, and the expansion will create job opportunities which will benefit significant numbers of people locally and beyond. Although concerns have been expressed about the environmental impacts, including noise and pollution, these effects can, and should, be mitigated by an insistence that the operators of passenger and freight aircraft using the airport decommission their oldest and noisiest aircraft as a matter of urgency. By upgrading their fleets to the most modern aircraft they will ensure that noise and pollution will diminish significantly in coming years despite the proposed increase in aircraft movements. The proposals appear to have been well considered to provide economic benefit and environmental sensitivity. It is clear that our nation is underperforming economically. It is also clear that increased capacity for air traffic will be essential if our nation is to prosper and fulfil its potential in world markets in years to come. If this development does not proceed, there will be pressure to expand capacity instead at other south eastern airports , such as Stanstead, which will result in jobs being created in Essex rather than in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Subject to suitable consideration being given to environmental issues, I would therefore warmly welcome the development of Luton Airport.
