I object most strongly to the proposed expansion of Luton Airport, chiefly because of the serious noise disturbance which is already excessive. Almost doubling the number of passengers will also have negative implications for local traffic density and other infrastructure elements. The current night-time flights, all through the small hours of the morning, cause continuous disturbance, even with double-glazed windows firmly closed – my house is directly under the landing flight path. I believe that the airport is supposed to be closed for a period of about 6 or 7 hours overnight but this is never the case: there are continuous landings, every night. Doubling the size of the airport would dramatically exacerbate this abuse. I also consider the so-called “benefits” of expansion, such as the creation of employment, to be spurious – it is an argument trotted out by all such schemes, relying on the universal assumption that “creating jobs” is a good thing, when all it does at most is take people away from wherever they are currently working. I repeat: I strongly object to the expansion proposals.
