LUTON AIRPORT EXPANSION I wish to strongly object to the proposals for the expansion of Luton airport. 1..We need to reduce the number of airports in the UK as air transport is not sustainable at the current level. We have to concentrate on protecting the environment. Take off and landing charges should be increased substantially instead. 2. There is no sustainable green fuel in the long term for the aviation industry. The problem is that the population is rising nationally and internationally, and the world (together with our own overcrowded country) needs crops for food, NOT for making fuel. We are already destroying the forests which are essential for our long term survival. 3, Studham,Whipsnade and Kensworth are all in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there is good reason for this. Enjoyment of this would be ruined by more noise and pollution from aircraft. Studham Common in particular needs protection, being home to a wide variety of plants and animals - including dormice and orchids. 4. Air transport should not be subsidised any further as it already benefits from cheap fossil fuels. Instead bus fares should be reduced to encourage more sustainable transport especially as this is of benefit to the poor who get no benefit from air transport subsidies. Public transport needs to be expanded creating more jobs for the lower paid.
