Clarion Housing Group own around 1300 homes in Luton as well as in Whitwell and Hitchen. We have identified that the majority of these homes are in close proximity to the new runway and will be impacted by the airport expansion through lower air quality and and increased noise pollution. Planes take off and land both ways, sometimes even in diagonal according to wind, weather and local pressure, so it's it will impact the properties in all directions Air quality The expansion at Luton airport will result in an increase in road traffic from passenger, freight and other activity in the area which will contribute to a degradation in air quality, particularly NO2, this is alongside an increase from the aircrafts themselves. The associated health impacts of poor air quality are increased risks of developing heart and respiratory diseases and longer term exposure to high levels of NO2 can affect lung function in children and babies. Noise pollution The construction of the additional runway in Luton will generate significant noise pollution impacts, these will be superseded by the noise impact of aircrafts once the work is completed. The British Medical Journal (BMJ) carried out a study into the mental and physical impacts of aircraft noise which stated that increased exposure to aeroplane noise was associated with a significant increase in insomnia, increased risks of cardiovascular disease alongside mental health admissions to hospital. We also believe the value of our homes may be decreased by this project.
