I strongly object to the proposed massive increase in passenger numbers and flights at Luton Airport. 1. Noise pollution - when the wind is from the east, departure flights fly directly above Knebworth and many turn south at this point. Noise levels are often above 50db and are loud enough to wake us at night and early morning. The summer months are particularly bad and we have to stop talking if we are in the garden to wait for a plane to pass. At busy times, flights are very frequent with only a few minutes between each. The proposed increase from 18/19mppa to 32mppa would have a major impact on the tranquillity of our home and village and would seriously impact our health and wellbeing, in particular through disturbance to sleep due to late and early flights. 2. Environmental pollution - whilst there are advances being made in aviation technology, there is no doubt that more flights will mean more environmental pollution from carbon fuel emissions. 3. Climate change - the increase in flights will contribute to global warming and is in direct conflict with national and local net zero policies. 4. The promises of sustainable green growth are green wash and not to be believed. Luton Airport is already running above its limit on passenger throughput of 18mppa. Biodiversity offset would do nothing to mitigate the huge harm caused by such a large increase in flights.
