For those of us living under the flightpath to Luton Airport, the main issues are noise and climate pollution. With the capacity restricted to 18 million passengers a year, the noise is just about bearable: at 32 million, it would make it an ordeal to conduct a conversation outdoors. Plus, there is every chance of sleep being disturbed more often than at present during the so-called 'silent' period between 12 midnight and 04.00 a.m.(if this still exists). And why on earth is the airport trying to expand at a time when the whole world is being warned that further fuel-driven climate warming could be suicidal! The situation is hardly likely to be improved by the additional road traffic attracted to the airport by its greater capacity. That traffic, too, will not make life any easier for those who live near the airport. So, we face the prospect of being deafened, frustrated and poisoned: all for the sake of those extra people who want a holiday abroad.
