I write as someone who, although having a Kent address, spends approximately 50% of my time in Wheathampsted which is already badly affected by air traffic to/from Luton Airport. I wish to express my opposition to the expansion proposals. It seems to me that the whole scheme is essentially a money maker for Luton Borough Council and ignores the detrimental environmental and social costs which will arise if this goes ahead. The Luton proposals are by there own admission largely to provide finance to allow 'greater support for front-line services and community organisations'. The airport is owned 'entirely for community benefit' they state, but while this may be true for Luton residents, it is certainly not the case for the wider area which suffers from its operation. The expansion proposals will have a significant environmental impact, particularly in terms of more noise pollution from the increase in air traffic for residents living in the area. It is not reasonable, I suggest, to subject residents in the wider area to the adverse effects this will have on their quality of life simply to provide additional funding for Luton Council projects!
