The proposed expansion in the number of flights is unsustainable at a time when carbon emissions urgently need to be reduced to net zero. The catastrophic effects of climate change are already having a demonstrable and frightening effect in terms of fire, flood and drought and we are passing this legacy on to our children. For the large residential area underlying the flight paths air pollution, noise and loss of sleep will be the penalty paid for this proposal. There is already a serious downgrading of the quality of life. Road traffic will also suffer a disproportionate increase in an area where a major ‘rail’ freight depot is also being proposed and rail links are unable to cope. There will be loss of local amenity (the Wigmore Park nature reserve) currently providing a ‘lung’ for the surrounding community. The scale of the proposal is unsuitable for an already congested site surrounded by residential dormitory locations and which is already impacting negatively on the surrounding area. This is about poor management, expediency and greed on the part of the council with no consideration for the negative impact on a massive neighbourhood area and the lives of an electorate affected both in the short and longer term.
