We are in a climate emergency. While the UK should be committed to the terms of the Paris Agreement in order to keep the temperature rise capped by 1.5c, we are absolutely not on course to achieve this and we need to take drastic steps now to prevent environmental catastrophe. Doubling the capacity of Luton Airport will directly lead to a significant increase in our CO2e emissions. The argument for job creation is specious: investment in environmentally sound alternatives to air travel, and in the green economy, would also create thousands of jobs and enhance the local economy. We should be working to reduce air travel, not expand it.
