I am extremely concerned about this project, on the grounds of climate change, and also pollution and disruption to local people. It seems to me that we need urgently to start placing higher value on the quality of day-to-day life of ordinary citizens of the United Kingdom. An expansion of Luton Airport gambles that the existing economic priorities will prevail come what may. Yet it is clear that more and more people all over the world are highly impacted by and anxious about climate change and this will, before too long, change behaviour patterns. Equally, business will become more and more constrained in how it can operate globally because of climate change. So perceived economic benefits to this project will be short-lived. In more specific terms, there will be enormous negative impacts on the health of Luton residents caused by air and noise pollution. The accompanying destruction of local nature will destroy the habitats of multiple species and reduce the biodiversity of the area, precisely at the time when we know we must do the exact opposite. There will also be pressure on existing infrastructure during the construction phase. These points summarise my concerns. We are required by law to meet the UK's climate change targets, and expanding Luton Airport will therefore surely be unlawful. I do not want to see the UK breaking climate change laws, I would rather see us leading the world towards a better, cleaner and cooler future for all who share Earth as home.
