I have two main reasons for opposing the Council’s plan to expand the airport. The first is about climate change and the second is the impact the expanded airport will have on the lives of the people living around the airport, including those who suffer adverse impacts yet get no benefit from it like the villages and towns surrounding Luton. On climate change, no one can say they do not know what is happening and likely to intensify in coming years. Scientists and the UN are crying out that we are sleep walk-ing into planet devastation and everything must be done to slow it down and mitigate its effects. Expanding airport capacity flies in the face of this and absolutely should not happen. The local authority should be looking to attract investment in sustainable green business and industry to provide jobs for people in the area which willl secure their children’s future, not plunge it into hopelessness. On the issue of impact on surrounding communities, it is unconscionable that people living around Luton but do not vote for Luton councillors or receive any benefit from airport income should have to suffer the impact of aircraft noise and exhaust fumes of over flying aircraft./ Although those are the two issues that concern me most, I have other issues such as air pollution in a town which already suffers from it more than towns of the same size.
