Alternative energy is vital for the future of the earth however the environmental cost must not overshadow the benefits. The approach should be measured and joined up and look at all the possible approaches so there can be no reproach from future generations. The speech made by Margaret Thatcher in the late 1980s at the Conservative Party Conference in which she declared ‘No generation has a freehold on this earth, all we have is a life tenancy with a full repairing lease and this government intends to meet the terms of that lease in full’ is as relevant now as it was then. In a world where we criticise countries such as Brazil for destroying natural habitats, we must demonstrate that we take our ecological role seriously. Remote, wild and under populated, the Suffolk Coast is a largely forgotten part of England and consequently a haven for wildlife whose special character must be protected. I therefore feel very strongly that there should be a review of the various energy proposals that are planned for east Suffolk so that a solution can be achieved that balances our renewable energy needs with the protection of the environment.
