Costs go up simply because you are bringing in wood from other countries, thus denuding their forestation and making their lives more difficult. A few years ago there was a lot of local talk about using willow (which grows rapidly), coppiced frequently and grown in the fields opposite the Drax Power Station itself. If you must burn wood, this would work out a lot cheaper than importing wood from the other side of the world, costs including transportation as well as the actual amount paid for chopping the trees down and converting them into small pellets.
