I am sceptical of this new place for the following major reasons: This plan may risk human health as Drax seems to want to use chemicals called amines to separate or ‘scrub’ the CO2 from the other flue gases. These chemicals release by-products, including nitrosamines and nitramines, which are probable carcinogens that may sometimes cause cancer. As you may know, the trapping and compression of Carbon dioxide uses up a lot of energy – about 28% of all the energy produced by each unit, according to Drax themselves, but potentially more – which means there’s a high risk of the consequent shortfall in electricity production being met from increased fossil fuels being burned elsewhere, leading to yet more carbon dioxide emissions. This proposed project could have catastrophic impacts on local communities and wildlife as Drax’s own planning documents show that the development will take at least 4 years to construct; with frequent noise and ramped up traffic. The development could further lead to the degradation of vital habitats near the site where protected species have been found; including water voles, otters, Great Crested Newts and many species of threatened birds. Thank you for your time.
