Denuding virgin forest, processing into wood pellets before shipping long distances by land and sea comes at unquantified environmental costs. Clearing the Drax site and repurposing to capture sunlight through solar and vertical wind turbine technology makes the only short and medium term sense. Present personnel could easily be retrained to fulfill the new roles in renewables. Given the fact that costs that newrenewables are already cheaper than fossil fuels and processed timber or other biomass, rolling out these technologies would seem the only sensible long-term solution. The large area of the Drax site would perhaps allow space for the manufacture of solar panels and even wind turbines for onshore location as the inevitable deployment of these develops.
