The race to zero carbon admissions has blindsided many into the implications of trying to achieve the goal by 2050. The use of free solar energy is to be applauded but at what cost, can we really afford to keep swallowing up the countryside at the present increasing rate we are? Not only for solar projects, but for industry and also housing. Many of the solar projects [including Oaklands], are proposed and being built on arable land used both directly and indirectly in food production. As it stands at the moment we only produce around 60% of the food we consume, so with more and more arable land being swallowed up this percentage production will only get lower and lower. The ‘knock on’ effect will lead to an increased demand in imports. With world events apparently taking a sinister turn, the UK needs to devote as many recourse's as possible and prohibit the demise of good arable land. A blockade by an aggressive foreign power would cut off food import supplies and starve the country into submission.
