Obvious impact of infrastructure of this size and type fall into two main considerations: Construction Impact As we understand the assessment to date, the construction will be undertaken over a considerable period of time and involve detrimental impact on those living within the development area, and those in the peripheral area. Activities are to include installation of the necessary generation equipment and infrastructure required to control and service the installation which will involve excavation of service roads in certain villages and widespread upheaval of existing roads and landscape in the area. Obviously this will be detrimental to the living conditions of those directly affected living in the immediate vicinity and to those the larger area affected. Environmental Impact after Construction It will be inevitable that the very fabric of the area will change considerably under the effect of a huge area of solar panel coverage resulting in challenging conditions for existing wildlife and fauna. The loss of an enjoyable natural landscape important for both locals and visitors will be difficult to quantify but will result in the loss of the valuable benefit provided by undertaking outdoor pass times in the area. From a visual perspective, such a huge area covered by solar panels in rolling countryside will be an horrendous eyesore in such a beautiful location which currently provides attraction to tourist visiting Stamford and locals alike. The loss of valuable productive farming land must also be of concern considering the potential issues of food production in this country – dependence on importing has recently become an obvious national concern. Though the importance of generation of energy within our country is obvious and necessary, we believe alternative, less sensitive areas of land would be more suitable for a combination of new green generation energy strategies.
