I've been opposed to road building for decades. New roads encourage more people to make longer motor vehicle journeys more frequently and at greater speed, creating even more air, water, and noise pollution. New roads are quickly filled with traffic, which means our cities and towns become more polluted and congested because those vehicles have to come from and go to somewhere, usually built-up areas. The A303 could perhaps be in a shallow cut-and-cover tunnel as it runs past Stonehenge. but the DOT proposal is monstrously complicated, with massive junctions and huge cuttings. This is a blatant waste of valuable arable land. We need to reduce our human population significantly in the next couple of hundred years so that we can attempt to become a truly sustainable nation, instead of relying so heavily on food imports for survival. We need more fewer people and more land to grow food and timber. Building new roads will not achieve this. This A303 tunnel project, as it stands, is insane.
