My main reasons for objecting to the A303 development at Stonehenge (described by UNESCO as a ‘landscape without parallel’) are as follows:

  • The development will cause irreparable damage to the landscape around Stonehenge
  • It will involve the loss of potential archaeological materials under the surface
  • It is likely to cause damage to the Blick Mead Mesolithic site and its setting
  • It will cause a loss of view from the road, with future visitors having to pay for the privilege
  • It will disturb the habitats of rare vbird species (Stone Curlew and Great Bustard)
  • It will produce greater noise because of the faster traffic

UNESCO's advisors and many archaeologists are in agreement that the scheme should not go ahead in its present form.

Thank you. Dr. Edward Livings
