International specialists from UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS have advised against the road scheme which will damage Stonehenge. UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee in 2018 urged the government to explore less damaging options. Many leading archaeologists with expertise in the WHS have objected to the scheme.

In the face of such authoritative and widespread condemnation, it seems unbelievable that the Government or any other responsible body should support placing the A303 in a short tunnel as it passes the Stones. Such a tunnel with associated engineering works would cause irreparable damage to the WHS. How can support be given to putting the short term convenience of drivers over the long-term preservation of a unique site which has stood for centuries? Hopefully this situation will be reconsidered and no more damage will be done to the World Heritage Site which will be protected for current and future generations to enjoy. Support needs to be given to a wider package of sustainable transport measures to address traffic issues in the area, with this option not being considered further.
