Stonehenge and the area surrounding it, as a world heritage site, is of immense historic and archaeological importance. It is world renowned and receives visitors from all over the globe. The proposed major infrastrucure works cannot possibly be undertaken without massive detriment to the area. Once altered or damaged, the site can never be restored or re-created to its original condition. However carefully the work is carried out, this sort of disruption is inevitable.
The entire area, not just Stonehenge itself, contains much important archaeological data and remains, and should not be permanently damaged by such a large-scale infrastructure project. Once the work is under way it will be impossible to preserve the integrity of the larger site.
