My concern is in particular about Blick Mead:

  • The boundaries of the site have not been established. As well as the spring itself it appears that the site extends to Countess Roundabout (borehole evidence), north of the A303 (flint finds) and towards the northern point of the Vespasian's Camp rampart. Both bridge supports and tunnel east entrance directly destroy these areas.
  • Blick Mead may be seen as a parallel with the National Archives Office as a store of the heritage of Britain, stored not in paper but in organics that we are just starting to read. It is the cradle site of the British Isles. It is not just another archaeological site.
  • The preservation of the Blick Mead organics is a fluke of hydrology we don't understand. The hydrology of the area is complex (at least three water sources) and the assumption is that any building in the vicinity is likely to change it and destroy the organics.
  • The A303 tunnel would be an act of destruction of the cradle site of Britain.
