The proposed road scheme and tunnel will do irreversible damage to the site of Britain's foremost ancient monument. The entrance and exit of the proposed tunnel would sit inside the Stonehenge world heritage site, and a new flyover may be involved. Some of the rich and unique archaeological potential of the site will be lost both through direct damage (which has already begun with test drilling) and by the lowering of the water table. The value of the road scheme in terms of traffic management has not been established.
