Plans for a road tunnel near Stonehenge are "severely flawed" and the "whole project must be re-assessed" a World Heritage Sites advisory body has said.

[Redacted], chair of the Icomos-UK World Heritage Committee, which advises Unesco on World Heritage Sites (WHSs) has said that plans for dual carriageways at both ends of the tunnel would have a "substantial negative and irreversible impact". Vitally important and significant archaeological evidence may be lost due to heavy machinery being used on wet ground. Moreover, it has been suggested that "the short tunnel plan will create serious damage to the landscape on each side, within the world heritage site which the government is ignoring its commitment to protect.”
