Most UK archaeology societies and specialist archaeologists, together with UNESCO and its international advisers, say the scheme should not go ahead in its present form as it threatens the wider historic landscape and underlying monuments. Highways England ignored all of the well-argued alternative options that minimise damage to the World Heritage Site for reasons that remain obscure. A reassessment is required urgently.
