For my whole life, I have known Stonehenge. It is a beacon for me as I drive past. It is the emblem of my homeland. When I am abroad [Redacted] I dream of home, and Stonehenge is what I dream of. My ancestors have always seen the monument, Lord Pembroke was the first to describe its existence with any accuracy, he was the landowner who let the antiquarians in to see it at first. It has been the most distinctive landmark since that time, part of all of our heritage, not just the heritage of the archaeologists or those tourists who are rich enough to pay entry fees to see it. It is part and parcel of my heritage, just in the same way as the American Indians have their sacred sites, just as the aboriginals from Australia have their rock, so Stonehenge is mine.To see it undisturbed is extremely precious. To be able to see it from my car window is equally so. My ancestors were buried near there.
