I believe that only a deep long tunnel will preserve the underground natural structures surrounding the site; the risk of excessive artificial drainage, the fracturing of shallower strata will undermine the heritage and the accumulation of fumes and particulates in the approach cuttings will otherwise lead to invasion by algae and other organisms inimical to the preservation of the monument in the long term. With the likely state of the nation's finances projected by some forecasters for the next 50 years, there will be no funds for remedial work within a life-time.
