Stonehenge is a World Heritage site. It is of immeasurable cultural and archaeological value. That is why a tunnel built within the designated area of this site ,which contains as yet unrecorded information on the past, would cause irreparable damage. The present road running through the area has little impact ,but a tunnel would be an insensitive intrusion quite out of character with the environment. In view of its high priority status it would be appropriate to build an alternative route well away from the site, diverting traffic into a wide arch either north or south of the area. The priority is the historic site of more than four thousand years, not the car journey.
