I am deeply concerned that the present highway proposal will undermine the heritage significance of the wider Stonehenge landscape which is a fragile reality already partially compromised by existing infrastructure and development. The World Heritage site, almost by definition, will be negatively impacted by the current proposal and there will inevitably be a permanent impact on existing archaeology from the construction work as now planned. Classic 'rescue archaeology' followed by destruction is not an adequate response to the significance of this protected landscape, in its entirety, which has been the subject of progressive illuminating study in recent years. The proposal needs to be reframed to address and remedy (not mitigate) the full extent of the heritage loss consequent on a approval of the scheme.
