I am deeply concerned by these proposals. I believe that they will cause irreparable damage to this World Heritage Site, both archaeology and setting, described by UNESCO as a ‘landscape without parallel’. UNESCO’s international advisers have stated that the scheme should not go ahead in its present form. The area in question includes sites other than Stonehenge, including Blick Mead Mesolithic site where recent discoveries are seen as the key to understanding Stonehenge. This area is still being archeologically explored and the work proposed endangers not only future archeology and the beauty of the area, but also endangered bird species including the Great Buzzard and Stone Curlew. I am not satisfied that there has been adequate exploration of alternative options to the scheme in its present form. It would also be a great sadness were the stones not open to view by the public without payment. They are part of our history, and as our children are drawn into more and more screen time, if we want the next generations to care for our nation and it's monuments, they need to be able to see them as something that belongs to them on open access to view.
