As a frequent traveller on this route, I am aware of the traffic and scenic issues involved. However, this World Heritage Site, described by UNESCO as a ‘landscape without parallel’, must take precedence over traffic. The proposed tunnel is not essential in solving traffic flow problems but is already causing irreparable damage to a unique ensemble of archaeological features. . It is unthinkable to tunnel through such rich archaeology.
