I am concerned about the proposals for the A303 at Stonehenge. Primarily, I am concerned about the possible destruction of unexcavated archaeological sites in an area that has remained undisturbed for so long and is so rich in remains from the distant past. This area is of national, indeed international, importance. Our understanding of how the various monuments were used and how they interrelate to each other has developed rapidly in recent years and the destruction of any potential evidence could be devastating for our ability to build on this. In an area of such archaeological richness and importance, reliance on "rescue archaeology", working to tight deadlines determined by construction timetables and with the ultimate destruction or burial of the site predetermined is just not acceptable.
