The advances made in archeological techniques and therefore knowledge in the last generation has been extraordinary. In another generation we will know more, much more about the culture and history of our predecessors. Without knowing what and where that information may be, or how we will access it, we cannot as a responsible culture, afford to excavate and destroy a huge swathe of one of the world's most important and complete historical sites with all the information that ground may contain, simply to hide a road. We have destroted so much of our archeological history in the last few hundred years in the name of 'progress' or 'religion' and all that has done is made us poorer. This proposed road scheme is another example of exactly the same well-meant but short term planning.
