Whilst it is clear there is a need to do something to relieve traffic on the A303, the current proposal is obviously flawed. It is described by the International Council on Monuments and Sites and UNESCO as “severely flawed” and notes that the scheme needs to be reassessed. Despite welcoming improvements in the scheme, English Heritage note there is still work t be done.

The area is one of international and extraordinary importance. It has become clear that understanding of Stonehenge and the other monuments that surround it, depends on the landscape in which these structures exist. We continue to make important discoveries in the area. Ten years ago the riches discovered at Black Mead were unknown and unsuspected. There may be further discoveries which await us. Changes in water levels might destroy archeology that - as yet - is unknown. This more than merely speculative, given the richness of prehistoric archeology in the area.

It is to be noted that the reassurances offered by Highways England that this will not happen ring very hollow after they recently drilled through an ancient platform, destroying precious archeology, without consultation with archaeologists, at Blick Hill. It is clear that insufficient care has been given to something of importance not merely to the culture and history of Britain, but European culture.

We risk causing irreparable damage to a unique structures.
