The proposed scheme will cause irreparable damage to the archaeology and setting of the World Heritage Site around Stonehenge. It will cut across and destroy parts of the wider prehistoric landscape, including the site and setting of the important Mesolithic site at Blick Mead. Although the existing road alongside Stonehenge is far from ideal, it does at least enable passing motorists to appreciate the monument, so more people see it than would be the case with a tunnel. The present tunnel scheme will not only remove this view, but will also damage the prehistoric landscape, so the worst of both worlds.
