I am profoundly concerned about the environmental and archaeological impact of the proposed scheme.

In particular, I am extremely anxious about the Blick Mead site, discovered only so recently in the long history of the entire landscape, which represents the epicentre of Britain, a cultural monument of global significance.

The loss of view, the excessive concern with getting from one place to another a little faster, and the vast expense, which will all diminish a property given into the government's care on behalf of the nation, are further worries.

Finally, I am old enough to remember being able to wander among the stones at any time of day or night, at no cost. Now it is hemmed off and already, in a sense, wounded: this tunnel, I fear, will be fatal.
