Stonehenge is a National Treasure of unparalleled importance both in terms of its unique architectural form and its iconic and therefore symbolic power over the imagination of the British people and the world community which is why it is designated a World Heritage Site. The landscape in which is set is crucial to the visual impact of its form. It is my contention that the proposed development would impact negatively on the landscape surrounding the Neolithic masterpiece. It would moreover remove the view of it from the main road. It would lead to increased noise due to faster and heavier traffic. As the surrounding area is so full of smaller sites of archeological importance, it seems unlikely that one or more of these sites wouldn’t be adversely affected by the construction work necessary for an underpass of this scale.
