I am opposed to the present plan to tunnel close to Stonehenge as it do serious and irreparable damage to the priceless archaeological heritage of the World Heritage Site. The traffic should be diverted away from the site so that it never encroaches closer than 5 miles to the site, so that its heritage can be explored and preserved by experts. The unique character and atmosphere of the site must be preserved and the full extent of the megalithic site restored to its original curtilege. Tourists must be able to see the full vista of the local topography, and the unique wildlife of the present site, especially its rare birds, should not be disturbed. The international community has already expressed its disapproval of the current proposals, and it should be heeded.
