This application will cause irreparable damage to the WHS, its archaeology and setting, described by UNESCO as a ‘landscape without parallel’. The visible stone circles will be made to appear insignificant next to the modern construction involved to create the new road and tunnel. It is no wonder that UNESCO’s international advisers say the scheme should not go ahead in its present form. There are also concerns about damage that will be caused to Blick Mead Mesolithic site and its setting. There is a lack of alternative options in consultation that would not damage the World Heritage Site such as a longer tunnel or alternative route. There will be loss of the view from the road and need to pay to see the Stones in future. Additionally, this will disturb rare bird species (Stone Curlew and Great Bustard) for which considerable effort and expense have gone into protecting. There is only one Stonehenge, it must not be damaged for now and future generations. Increased noise from faster traffic.
