I regularly visit Stonehenge and travel in the surrounding areas. A diversion of the A303 either by tunnel or overland in the immediate vicinity of Stonehenge would

  1. Potentially damage with archeological significance of Stonehenge and the linked sites of significance around it. It is one of the most significant World Heritage Sites and any project which threatens the environment in which it I should situated must be avoided.
  2. Any diversion of the A303 in the immediate vicinity will substantially increase traffic flow, noise and ot necessarily improve the traffic congestion surrounding the stones
  3. A tunnel is immensely expensive. Will that have an impact on the already high cost of vining the site?
  4. There are vast tracts of isolated heathland in the area used for military exercises which could be used overland subject to the impact on the habitats of the wildlife, diverting normal A303 traffic away from Stonehenge.
  5. Any project should be designed to cater for the isolation of traffic heading specifically for Stonehenge whilst offering a diversion away from the site for the usual A303 traffic. For example any diversion should also take account of the immense congestion which occurs also a few miles beyond Stonehenge at Winterbourne particularly in holiday season.
