Stonehenge (including the whole landscape around the main site) is a unique and priceless part of our national heritage and it is of course also a World Heritage Site. I am concerned that the plan for the A303 expressway currently favoured by Highways England will cause permanent damage to the site and some of its archaeological features and go against the recommendations of UNESCO advisers. Incidental damage will also be caused to the Blick Mead Mesolithic site and the area round it. The amenity of the entire landscape will also be negatively affected. The site as a whole is much too precious for such tampering to be permitted on any grounds, certainly not on grounds of temporary economic convenience. I am also concerned that the expressway scheme would negatively affect populations of two extremely rare native bird species (stone curlew and great bustard).
