I am concerned about the planning proposal (Planning Inspectorate Reference: TR010025) which would involve putting a dual carriageway through the World Heritage Site which currently exists around Stonehenge.

This is certain to cause huge damage both to known archaeological sites and to those not yet identified and to destroy evidence as to the relationships of these sites to one another and the wider landscape. New sites are still emerging and known sites are producing new data. As a professional archaeologist who has worked on field surveys in the area I am convinced that there are sites yet to be found.

This proposal goes against the advice of the Unesco World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS with regard to Britain's obligations as a signatory of the World Heritage Convention. Failing to take such advice into account carries risks for the site and for the nation, more time is needed to consider representations from these organisations.
