I object to the proposed road scheme because:

  1. It will cause irreparable damage to a site not just of national but of global significance. It will also impact the important archaeology of the area meaning future generations will have their understanding of the site severely compromised by an act I am confident they will view as vandalism.
  2. It will diminish the experience of visitors through the noise pollution the faster cars will generate.
  3. It will screen this iconic monument from public view, at least from the road, meaning visitors will effectively have to pay to see it.
  4. Cars will not be here forever. It is doubtful whether individual travel on such a scale as the road is meant to facilitate is sustainable. In the 1930s the guildhall in Norwich was almost demolished to make way for a tramline. I arrived in the city in the 1980s. There were no longer any trams. Why inflict such enormous damage to something so ancient for such a short term gain?
