I have worked and studied freshwater fisheries management for 40 years, the last 20 of which I have been based on the River Avon just south of West Amesbury, working for the Piscatorial Society who manage 20 miles of chalk stream across Hampshire and Wiltshire. The Piscatorial Society are an angling conservation organisation established in 1836 whose central interest is the healthy ecology of our rivers.

I would like to raise my concerns about the A303 tunnel that is planned to be excavated just north of where I live and work. The proposed scheme could have a huge impact on the ground water/springs that feed the River Avon (SSSI & SAC designated). Until the full impact of boring through the phosphatic chalk and the long and short term effects on the ecology of the area are fully understood I do not believe the work should go ahead.
