The scheme does not take into account the disturbance it will create for rare bird species such as Great Bustards and Stone Curlews, nor the increase in noise and pollution to the area.

The propsed development will permanently damage the archaeology and setting of the World Heritage Site. Unesco's advisers have already stated that the development should not go ahead - at least not as is presently envisaged.

Preparatory drilling by Highways England for the proposed tunnel has already damaged a unique 6,000 year old platform at Blick Mead. The platform preserves auroch hoof prints and is irreplaceable. Further drilling and excavation in the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site will damage or destroy organic and other archaeological remains. This sacred site, unique in the world, remains something of a mystery. Only archaeological processes should be permitted which help elucidate the construction, function and meaning of the site.

When the proposal for this development was made, there was no provision in the consultation of alternative schemes that would not damage the World Heritage Site.

The current road provides a view of the Stonehenge monument. The new scheme removes this and will mean only fee-payers can see the Stones. It monetizes a sacred World Heritage site that has been open to view for thousands of years.
