I have been visiting Stone Henge since the mid 1970s, first as a child and then as an adult. I find it hard to understand why anyone would think a massive dual carriageway is necessary at a time when we've known for decades the damage increased road capacity does to our natural and built heritage, and how much road transport contributes to cliamte change.

Stone Henge is of considerable historical significance as well have having religious meaning, and the road will do permanent damage to the World Heritage Site, its archaeology and setting.

UNESCO's advisers have made it clear that the scheme should not go ahead as proposed. There are concerns about damage to the Blick Mead Mesolithic site and its setting.

In addition there have been no alternative options for the road and an assumption that the proposed route takes priority over any damage to the World Heritage Site.

The scheme will result in a loss of view of the stones from the road. It will disturb rare bird species (Stone Curlew and Great Bustard), and lead to increased noise from more and faster traffic.
